How long does CBD stay in your Urine ?

Increasingly research indicates consuming Cannabidiol (CBD) may provide numerous health benefits, such as relieving pain, reducing anxiety and aiding better sleep. Such benefits have helped CBD to surge in popularity, but whilst CBD users may not give it a second thought potential users may have concerns regarding how long CBD stays in their system. In particular, those who may be subject to regular drug testing for work or sporting purposes may require more information before popular products such as CBD oils or CBD gummies.

As CBD is derived from the hemp plant it naturally may contain THC, the psychoactive compound which gives the ‘high’ sensation and which may be detectable in your system for up to 30 days. However, in the UK the legal limit for THC is 2 micrograms per litre of blood, and all of Our Products are below this limit. In addition, we have numerous 0% THC products for those who are not permitted to have any THC in their bodies.

How long does CBD Stay in your system ?

In general CBD can stay in your system for between two and five days, however this depends on several factors we explain in more detail below.

The Dosage you use

As you’d expect, CBD stays longer in your system the higher the dosage you take. A general recommendation for new users is to aim for between 15mg and 30mg per day initially, and potentially increase 5mg per week after the first week. The dosage for each product should be clearly labelled, with our products ranging from 10mg Softgels and CBD Gummies to 10,000mg Oils and Muscle Balm.

How often you use CBD products
Again, intuitively the more you use CBD the longer it stays in your system. CBD is highly soluble in fat, meaning it can build up in our fatty tissues when taken regularly and hence remain for prolonged periods of time (weeks) in heavy users. Conversely, if you are an irregular user of CBD products it will clear from your system much quicker. In addition by exercising more you are likely to burn more fat, and potentially the CBD stored there, hence increased exercise levels may lead to CBD leaving your system quicker.

How you take your CBD

The way you consume CBD impacts how long it can stay in your system. Taking oils sublingually (as drops under your tongue) is one of the most popular and most effective methods of taking CBD. Tinctures also allow for CBD Drops to be added to other drinks, and can be a handy alternative for those who don’t like the taste or feel of drops under their tongue.  Taking CBD Oils or Flavoured drops in this way ensures that a high percentage of the compound is absorbed quickly and directly into the bloodstream, due to your tongue being a capillary dense area. This means it gets into your bloodstream quicker, so gets to work faster and also passes through your system quicker than other methods.

Other CBD products can be eaten directly, for example as food products such as CBD Gummies or CBD Capsules. Whilst convenient and easy, consuming CBD in this way forces it to pass through your digestive system before any part of it can pass into your bloodstream. This reduces the concentration of CBD whilst also causing a delay in experiencing the effect of the CBD taken.

Oral CBD products are convenient to take and often available in a variety of flavours. CBD capsules are ideal for those wishing to maintain a consistent level of CBD in their system, and can be taken once or twice per day in a similar fashion to daily vitamins. CBD Gummies are extremely popular due to the range of flavours and ease in which they can be carried and consumed.

CBD drinks contain the same non-psychoactive compound found in other CBD products, but as drinks are more convenient and potentially easier to ingest. CBD Drinks also come in a range of flavours, adding to variety and are even available as CBD Coffee and CBD Tea so can be easily incorporated into your daily routine – a calming tea before bed for example may aid relaxation and sleep.

CBD Topicals, such as CBD Balms and Massage Oils, don’t even make it into your bloodstream as they cannot pass your skin. Instead, they interact topically where they are applied, and hence can be a great way to get direct relief to painful or tired muscles, or aid recovery by heating a specific area of your body.

Your own body

Every one of us is individual, with unique physical characteristics which ensures CBD will affect different people in different ways. Aspects such as your Body Mass Index, Metabolism and even your body’s water content can impact how long CBD stays in your system, as we illustrated above when discussing personal exercise levels. In short, the faster your metabolism the faster the CBD will pass through you.

What you eat

What you eat, how and when you eat all affect the impact of CBD on your body. Similar to most supplements, taking CBD on an empty stomach means it is absorbed by your body quicker, speeding the metabolism and elimination process. However, you may find it harder to ingest on an empty stomach. Conversely, taking CBD on a full stomach will slow it’s digestion, ensuring it stays in your body for longer. Hence we would recommend taking CBD products on a full stomach, since that aids your body to break it down, ensures slower digestion and keeps the CBD in your body for longer.

How long does it take to feel the effects of CBD ?

As discussed above this can vary depending on the individual’s characteristics such as BMI, metabolism, CBD usage history and body weight. In general, the effects of CBD products can be felt after around 15 minutes but the type of CBD product will also impact how quickly its effects are felt, as we’ll discuss in more detail below;

How long does it take for CBD Oil to work ?

As explained previously, this depends on a number of factors individual to yourself such as your metabolism, when and how much you eat, your bodyweight and how much you exercise. Most CBD products take around 15 minutes before effects begin to be felt, but oils taken sublingually (under your tongue) may be quicker.

How long does CBD Oil stay in your system ?

Again, this is different for each individual due to the factors previously mentioned. It also can vary depending on the dosage and method of CBD used. However, as a guide CBD can remain in your system between 11-28 days.

Does CBD Oil work immediately ?

No, even CBD products consumed orally do not give an immediate effect. Oils used under the tongue are felt the quickest, due to the speed with which it is absorbed into the bloodstream, but CBD Oils generally take between 15 and 60 minutes before effects are felt.

If you are looking for effects to be felt quickly then Vaping is the best method, as it is absorbed quickest and can be felt within 3 minutes.

How long do CBD effects last ?

Again, how long CBD effects last depends on the factors mentioned previously like level of dosage and your individual physical characteristics. In general the effects of CBD can usually last for between 2 and 6 hours.

As CBD is fat soluble, and so can be stored in fat cells, the higher the level of body fat a person has then the longer CBD will remain in your system. Similarly if you have a higher metabolism, or exercise regularly, your body is more likely to use the fat cells for energy and hence metabolise the CBD stored there.

Will CBD show up in a Drug Test ?

In Drug Tests the level of THC is being tested, not the CBD part itself. THC is the psychoactive element which provides the ‘high’, and the potential impact on performance is why some sports and workplaces may test for it.

Different CBD products may have different levels of THC, so it is important to check manufacturers’ claims and Certificates whenever possible. Whilst it is possible to find CBD products with 0% CBD it is important to confirm such claims are correct. In the UK CBD legal CBD products cannot contain more than 0.2% THC, but clearly it is the individual’s responsibility to ensure any product complies with the current law before purchase or use.

What products contain THC ?

Full Spectrum CBD products contain all of the naturally occurring compounds of the plant such as Terpenes and other cannabinoids, hence can contain THC.

Broad Spectrum CBD products are similar to Full Spectrum but have been through a process to remove the THC. Hence these are usually THC free, but sometimes contain trace amounts.

CBD Isolate products contain CBD only

How long does CBD stay in your Urine ?

Although research into this area is rare, one study of one test subject showed CBD remained in his urine for only 24 hours.

If you are concerned about failing a work or sport related drug test you should consider using zero or near zero THC, so CBD Isolate or Broad Spectrum CBD products. Also check for Certificates of Analysis (COA) for any products you are considering buying.
